Tympanostomy Tube Otorrhea
[Otitis media Draining Through a Ventilation Tube]

Description : Ventilation tubes serve several functions, including, aeration of the middle ear [ventilation], equalization of the pressure within the middle ear to that of the surrounding atmosphere [pressure equalization], and the provision of a drainage pathway should an otitis media develop.

Note the mixture of air bubbles and mucopurulent discharge in the deep canal.

The hole in the tube allows the egress of pus directly from the middle ear. In this situation, a sample of the discharge should be taken for culture and sensitivity studies.
