Anterior nasal mucosal changes secondary to chronic nasopharyngeal obstruction from enlarged adenoids "the small purple turbinate syndrome"

Anterior nasal mucosal changes secondary to chronic nasopharyngeal obstruction from enlarged adenoids "the small purple turbinate syndrome"

Description : When the air flow through the nasal cavity ceases as result of enlarged adenoids, a characteristic secondary change in the mucosa of the anterior nasal cavity may be observed.

This change consists of a state of vasoconstriction and purple discoloration of the mucosa of the anterior portion of the inferior turbinates.

These changes result in a wider than normal anterior air space and pale purple small inferior turbinates. Such changes should not be misinterpreted as an allergic rhinitis.
