Migration Demonstrated by India Ink Dots

Description : The skin overlying the tympanic membrane and the external auditory canal has unique self cleansing mechanism.

The epithelium continuously migrates in a radial fashion off the surface of the tympanic membrane onto the contiguous skin lining the external auditory canal.

This process of migration continues in a lateral direction along the external auditory canal until the surface keratinocytes are eventually "shed" into the conchal bowl.
