Mucoid Otitis Media Histopathology

Description : The mucosa of the middle ear undergoes numerous changes in mucoid otitis media:

The mucosa is grossly thickened and edematous, there is marked vasodilatation of the submucosal vessels, there is an increase in both the number and the size of the mucous glands in the subepithelial layers.

Note the dense infiltration of the subepithelial layer by chronic inflammatory cells.
